Dear NCSD Families, Students, Staff and Community Members,
At the Norwalk Community School District Board of Directors meeting to be held on September 27, 2021, the Board Meeting Agenda will have an agenda item related to facial covering mandates (Return to Learn Plan agenda item). This is in response to the temporary restraining order a federal judge in Des Moines granted on September 13 prohibiting the State of Iowa from enforcing section 280.31 (prohibiting public school districts from requiring masks or face coverings for employees, students, or visitors).  The order, which can be read in full here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-csijuDuPnjO-O7TXKhReQQ6qhlC7u18/view?usp=sharing, is effective immediately. This allows each local school board to make the decision whether to require facial coverings in school buildings as part of their COVID mitigation plan.  The current mitigation plan for the NCSD recommends the wearing of masks in school buildings.

Due to the space limitations of the Lakewood Elementary Cafeteria and the time limitations of Public Forum set by Board Policy 213 PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN BOARD MEETINGS (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-TxjraWpjaG-haN57q4CyxbXbWpG4SmX/view?usp=sharing), the Board is requesting written comments on this agenda item topic from the Norwalk CSD community to help the Board make an informed decision about this question.  Students, staff members, families and community members may share their thoughts and opinions on the requirement of facial coverings by clicking HEREYour name, address and comment will be shared with the Board of Directors prior to the meeting and included as a supporting document on the agenda and recorded in the minutes of the meeting the same as name, address and comments that are spoken at a board meeting during Open Forum. Comments must be submitted by Sunday, September 26, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. (CDT). The Board and District thank you for sharing your thoughts and comments so an informed decision on how to move forward may be made.

Yours in Service,
D.T. Magee
